VH-UUG de Havilland D.H.85
Leopard Moth (c/n 7110)
This D.H.85 was purchased new
by pioneer aviatrix Nancy Bird (later Nancy Bird-Walton). That's
Ms. Bird fore of the prop.
She was the first female pilot in the Commonwealth to carry
passengers,
and was also instrumental in
setting up a flying medical service in outback New South Wales. Nancy
later established the
Australian
Women Pilots' Association. . Anyway, her Leopard Moth was written
off in a crash at
Cunnamulla, Qld in February 1940 (as seen in the photo below from the
Geoff Goodall
collection).
Another image of it appears
in the photo of a line up of aircraft at Parafield in 1936 under
the entry for VH-UGM.
