VH-ULF Westland
IV
(c/n WA1898)
This A.J. Jackson photo does not depict VH-ULM, but rather the
prototype Westland IV.
G-EBXK, with three 95 h.p. Cirrus III engines. In the event,
VH-ULM was to have been
a similar machine, purpose built for the Shell Oil Company of
Australia,
but never actually
went out there. A Capt E J Jones (former Deputy Controller of
Civil Aviation) and Flg Off
H C Owen left Australia in August 1929 to go to Westlands to supervise
production of the
aircraft.
When tested (with the three in-line engines) Jones found the
performance insufficient
to meet
the Company's requirements in the Australian climate, and decided to
cancel the order.
Westlands later re-engined the IVs with 105 h.p. Armstrong Siddeley
Genet Major 1A radials
and
this
aircraft became the Wessex. The VH-ULG aircraft was later
sold to Sabena to fill
an order for four of the machines, and became OO-AGD.
