VH-ABO de
Havilland D.H.87B Hornet
Moth
(c/n 8014)
This photo of a Hornet Moth was taken at Moorabbin
outside Schutt's hangar in the 1950s. It
was built as a 'B;
model with the square wing tips instead of the tapered ones of the
D.H.87A,
and was previously
G-ADKT, exported to Australia in March of 1938. . The photo below is
off the CofA and shows it
at Maylands, Perth circa 1938. Following that is a nice
airborne
shot of it,
also from the Geoff Goodall collection, taken at Maylands in 1939 when
it was flying
with the Royal Aero Club of
Western Australia. . Finally at the foot of the page is a photo of
-ABO by Bob Neate at Cootamundra
in March of 1962, by which time the rego had been
moved to the tail, in
accordance with what was in vogue at the time. It was withdrawn
from
use following at
accident at St. George, Queensland in December
1964. Interestingly, this
registration has
never been re-alloted. Could it possibly be, that
in this day and age of
(ridiculous)
political
correctness, it was deemed too sensitive?
