Westland Walrus
N9500
(c/n ?)
Some thirty-six of these carrier-borne fleet reconnaissance biplanes
were built for the Royal Navy
in 1920. Basically a D.H.9A with a 450 h.p. Napier Lion engine,
it was modified with various
lumps and bulges. Consequently, it was not a very handsome
machine. Nor, apparently were
its flying abilities, being a bit of a brute to fly.
Landings on a carrier must therefore have been
interesting, to say the
least. The Lewis machine gun mounted aft of the pilot
appears to have
been taken off in this Westland photo.
