Kellett XR-8A
44-21908
The Kellett Aircraft Company had been founded
by W. Wallace Kellett in 1930 and were
a leading
autogiro company. They were the original licensee of the patent
held by the Autogiro
Company
of America. In 1944 they turned their hand to developing
true powered rotary
wing
craft. The intermeshing rotors of this early chopper soon earned
it the nickname "Egg-
beater". The machine seen above was the second prototype
and was redesignated as the
XH-8 before
the military abandoned the Kellett design in favor of Sikorky's VS-300
series.
