Hawker
Fury NX802
The Fury was originally designed as a Typhoon/Tempest
successor. NX802 was the fourth
prototype and
was powered by a Centaurus XV engine. By the time the Fury
was in the
advanced development
stage the war ended, and the RAF cancelled its orders, preferring to
concentrate on jet
fighters. However, the Fury came into its own after WW II in
service with
the Royal Navy as the Sea
Fury and went on to become one of the best prop powered ship-
board fighter-bombers
of all time. Although the RAF never operated them, several
foriegn
forces did. In fact,
30 Furies were sold to Iraq in 1946.
