YU-SAP  Spartan/Zmaj Cruiser II                                  (c/n  1)

In 1935 the Zmaj Aircraft Company in Belgrade received a licence to build the Spartan
Cruiser II.          In the event, only one was built, YU-SAP, seen above, and which was
delivered to Aeroput in May of that year. It was named "Nis". On 15 July 1936, whilst
                                     flying Flight 627 Ljubljana-(Zagreb)-Susak (Rijeka)
and shortly after takeoff from Zagreb,
control was lost in foggy conditions and the aircraft crashed in a wheat field located in
Hrušćica, a few km from the airport  All seven occupants were killed.  The exact cause
                                     was unknown.  Probably pilot disorientation.
