HA-MOD  Ilyushin IL-18                                (c/n  180002002)

                                       

                                            The large size of the NK-4 turboprop engines are apparent in this view of a Malev IL-18
                                            from the Gábor Toth. collection.   It was, in fact, quite a handsome airliner.   Delivered in
                                            1960 HA-MOD did not fly the airways for long, stalling on an ILS approach into Le
                                            Bourget, Paris on 23 November 1962. with the loss of all 21 souls on board.    The
                                            subsequent investigation was not able to establish the cause of this stall whose pattern,
                                            according to the data supplied by the Soviet experts, could only be compatible with a
                                            G-load maneuver.  The engines were apparently at full power at the time.
