HA-MOD Ilyushin
IL-18
(c/n 180002002)
The large
size of the NK-4 turboprop engines are apparent in this view of a Malev
IL-18
from the
Gábor Toth. collection. It was, in fact, quite a
handsome airliner. Delivered in
1960
HA-MOD did not fly the airways for long, stalling on an ILS approach
into Le
Bourget, Paris on 23 November
1962. with the loss of all 21 souls on board. The
subsequent investigation was not
able to establish the cause of this stall whose pattern,
according to the data supplied by
the Soviet experts, could only be compatible with a
G-load maneuver. The engines were
apparently at full power at the time.
