G-EBYY Cierva C-8L
(Avro
611)
(no known c/n)
This rare photograph came from
Australia's Civil Aviation Historian Society archives.
G-EBYY
was test flown at Hamble in 1927 by Australian aviation legend Bert
Hinkler
(no doubt
why the CAHS has this image). Hinkler was a test pilot for Avro,
having
remained in England after having served in the RNAS during WW I.
Anyway, the
Cierva C-8 series were experimental autogyros designed by Juan de la
Cierva based
on Avro fixed wing aircraft fuselages, in this case the type 611.
This ancient machine
is preserved in the Musee de l'Air et de l'Espace in Paris.
