PP-SRM Vickers V.701
Viscount
(c/n 19)
This was one of ten V.701 Viscounts purchased from British European
Airways in 1962/3 to
augment the six V.827 models purchased new from Vickers in 1958.
It was previously
G-AMOF when with
BEA. On 31 October 1966 when operating VASP flight 237, -SRM
ran off a very wet runway at Rio de Janeiro's Santos Dumont Airport,
and came to rest on
the rocks of a
breakwater, with the nose almost touching the water. No
passengers or crew
were injured,
but the aircraft was subsequently written off.
