CX-AAH de Havilland
D.H.86
(c/n 2325)
Primeras Lineas Uruguayas de
Navegacion Aerea (roughly translated - the First Airline of Uruguay)
was founded in 1935 by a group of Uruguayan financiers led by importers
Alberto and Jorge Marquez
Vaeza and backed by some British investors. Its first service was
flown on 20 November 1936 on a
route
from Montevideo to the far north of the country on the Brazilian
frontier, terminating at Artigas
and
Rivera. Two D.H.90 Dragonflies were used. I have, as yet,
been unable to glean a shot of one
of these showing the registration. In 1937 the Dragonflys
were augmented by two D.H.86s, one
of which, CX-AAH, named 'Santa Rosa
de Lima' is shown here. This aircraft was formerly
Hillman Airways'
G-ADEC and flew faithfully until it was written off in a crash at
Artigas on
22 October 1945.
