XY-ACR Douglas
DC-3
(c/n 9629)
This is a Peter R. Keating shot taken at the old Changi Airport in
Singapore in 1956. Peter
was a purser on long distance BOAC
flights. He and I would meet for a beer when he (often)
came into
Sydney. Anyway, XT-ACR was a former RAF Dakota IV,
serial FD907, trans-
fered to the South African Air Force as serial 6803.
In 1949 it was civilianized as ZS-DER,
and then flown back to the U.K. and upgraded for UBA somewhere around
1950.
It crashed on 23 May 1969 whilst on final approach to Lashio
Airport. At 300' altitude it
went out
of control and crashed in a field, killing all eight occupants.
It was thought to have
lost control caused by an asymmetrical deployment of the flaps during
final approach.
