ZS-ADH de Havilland D.H.83 Fox
Moth
(c/b 4023)
This Fox Moth was shipped out to de Havilland Aircraft Co of South
Africa in October 1932.
It was sold off to a private owner and then became part of the fleet of
the Johannesburg Light
Plane Club at Baragwanath. In January 1936 it was sold to a
private owner in Southern
Rhodesia as VP-YBD. It later became part of Spencer Airways based
at Victoria Falls.
It then went to Northern Rhodesia as VR-RCE before returning to
Southern Rhodesia in
1954 as VP-YLS (Obviously Rhodesia was like New Zaland....repats
were not given their
old registrations). It finally returned to South Africa as, of
all things, a sprayer for Aerial
Farming, Ltd, based at Rand Airport. It was destroyed when it
crashed into a wall during
take off at Oranjeville, OFS on 24 January 1958. Original photo
by Jack McAdam,
whilst the aircraft was still with D.H.S.A.
Incidentally, I do not recall us
ever using a Fox Moth for aerial spraying in Australia.
I assume
the cabin was used for the hopper?
