ZS-ACJ   Junkers A.50du                                     (c/n  3583)

Several of these diminutive aircraft were operated by South West African Airways in 1931.
The territory was formerly German South East Africa, and mandated to the Union of South
Africa after WW I.    The airline was founded by F. Hoepfner, a German air ministry official.
Naturally, its aircraft were all German.    I assume these aircraft were used for air mail,
although maybe the odd fare paying passengers were carried.      By 1935 the airline had
merged into Union Airways, South African Airways' forerunner.  ZS-ACJ made it until
WW II when it was impressed into the SAAF as 2034.       It wasn't officially wfu until
1944.   The above photo was from South African Railways, and was probably taken
                                  out of a book.
