Barkley-Grow T8P-1
(c/n 5)
The Barkley-Grow T8P-1 was a kind of a cross
between a Lockheed 10A Electra and a
Beech 18,
although it had a fixed undercarriage. It employed a unique
patented "multi-spar"
all metal wing
which provided exceptional bending and torsional strength. When
sales in
the U.S.
failed to take off, it was marketed north of the border, where most of
the only eleven
machines built
were registered. This one was built for Yukon
Southern Air Transport and
would have passed to
Canadian Pacific in 1943, but instead was written off on December 22,
1942 when, whilst fitted with skis and on charter
by the US Army, was searching for a
crashed B-17. It broke through the ice at Angmagssalik, Greenland
and sank. Fortunately
Inuit hunters helped rescued the two crew and walked them
to a remote CPAL base.
