AT-6D N9272K
(c/n 88-15693)
Most AT-6s still around are
now resplendent as "warbirds" of course, but this one, taken
at Brackett Field, Southern
California in the late 1990s had a sort of pseudo-military look
to its civil
guise. This particular machine did a wheels-up landing in a hay
field at Brookings,
SD
in August 2003 when it ran out of gas shortly after take off.
Ever heard of a pre-flight?
When AT-6s (or any military machine, for that
matter) were sold to the public they looked
like the
example below. N7067C (below) was actually an ex-Navy machine,
making it an
SNJ-4 and was
photographed at Hawthorne Municipal Airport, Southern California in
the
mid 1960s.
The FAA has it listed as an AT-6C, although, as stated, this
machine was ex-
Navy, (BuNo 27756), thus making it an SNJ-4. (The FAA tends
to accept almost any
aircraft designation provided by the owner and rarely checks deeper
than that).
