Flying Tiger Line Canadair CL-44D4-2 N451T
(c/n 20)
The CL-44 was a
freighter derivative of the Bristol Britannia, built at Montreal from a
license
granted to the Canadian company in the 1950s. It was remarkable
inasmuch as the entire
aft fuselage swung open, giving easy access to loading large freight
items. In the event,
only 39 were built, thirteen of them (model D4-2) being delivered new
to Flying Tiger Line.
N451T was seen at SFO in the early 1960s in the above shot by William
T. Larkins.
This aircraft went on to serve with Iceland's Loftleidir as TF-LLJ and
then later to a
series of African air cargo companies. .
