ZK.AJY  Percival P.28 Proctor 1                            (c/n  H.1)

Formerly the RAF Proctor 1 R7485, this aircraft was the first to be built (in 1941) by F. Hills
and Sons Limited of Stockton-on-Tees.  .  Civilianized after the war by
Field Consolidated
Aircraft Services it became G-AHMU on 9 May 1946.  It was soon sold to L.E. Clark,
shipped to New Zealand and was
assembled at Mangere.  It was registered as ZK-AJY in
July 1946 (the first aircraft to have been registered after WW II) and then sold to C W Hewett
of Gore, dba Southern Scenic Air Services.   On 28 October 1948 the aircraft landed on the
hard sand of Big Bay. Fiordland to airfreight out whitebait.  It was caught by the incoming
tide and when dragged to the soft sand higher up the beach hit driftwood on take-off, damaged
the propellor and was basically written off.   (
Inaccessibility of the site precluded easy retrieval
and eventually the surf broke it up).
