VH-UZD de Havilland D.H.83 Fox
Moth
(c/n 4040)
This unmarked Fox Moth was actually owned by
Qantas. Acquired in April 1937, it was ex
G-ACBZ. I assume
it was used on Flying Doctor services. . Image above is courtesy
of the
John
Oxley
Library, State
Library of Queensland collection, while the photograph below, from
the
National Library of
Australia shows it at a remote bush station, probably serving at the
time
as
an air ambulance. . VH-UZD crashed on
landing at Tapini, New
Guinea on 3 October 1949.
Pilot was Len McNeil,
who took the photo at the foot of the page (via the Greg Weir
collection).
Load was 3 passengers
and 2 sacks of rice. The crash doesn't look too bad, but
nevertheless
the Fox Moth stricken
from the register on 3 March 1950.
