VH-UZD  de Havilland D.H.83 Fox Moth               (c/n  4040)

                                

                                     This unmarked Fox Moth was actually owned by Qantas.  Acquired in April 1937, it was ex
                                     G-ACBZ.  I assume it was used on Flying Doctor services. .  Image above is courtesy of the
                                     John Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland collection, while the photograph below, from
                                     the National Library of Australia shows it at a remote bush station, probably serving at the time
                                     as an air ambulance.  . VH-UZD crashed on landing at Tapini, New Guinea on 3 October 1949.
                                     Pilot was Len McNeil, who took the photo at the foot of the page (via the Greg Weir collection).
                                     Load was 3 passengers and 2 sacks of rice.  The crash doesn't look too bad, but nevertheless
                                     the Fox Moth stricken from the register on 3 March 1950.
