VH-UYX de Havilland D.H.87B Hornet Moth
(c/n
8139)
This machine spent all of its life, from November 1937 until it was
struck off the register in 1963, in NSW.
Originally it was delivered to the Newcastle Aero
Club. This photograph was taken at Bankstown in the
early 1950s. On 19 February 1949 -UYX crashed
on take off from Casino Airport, NSW. The rough
photo below is from the
Brisbane Courier-Mail for 21 February 1949. Pilot John
Roberts, aged 18 and
his 17 year old
brother, the passenger, were seriously injured.
Incredibly (looking at the damage) the
Hornet was repaired and
reappeared again in June 1953, registered to J. Neal of Tamworth.
