VH-UYJ
de
Havilland D.H.82A Tiger Moth (c/n
3593)
VH-UYJ
was an Australian-built Tiger, first registered in August 1937.
It went to the Royal Aero
Club of
NSW as seen in the photograph above, with the
black on navy blue scheme making the
registration hard to
discern. It "did its time" as A17-686. At
the end of its career as a trainer it was
acquired by
Aerial Crop Dusters and
Sprayers Pty Ltd who operated out of Moorabbin,
south-east
of
Melbourne. The lower shot was taken at that locale in
December of 1955. Note spray bars
under the
wings. This company
at one time used the rather irreverent slogan of
"Let Us Spray"!
Unfortunately
this Tiger went the way of
many aeroplanes in that industry and was
struck off the
register
following a crash shortly after I took this photograph.
I do remember thinking at the time
that that was a
rather ignominious end
for
such an historic
aircraft. The shot at the foot of the
page from
the CAHS archives shows the porr old thing following the above
mentioned fatal prang.
