VH-UTU Avro 594 Avian Mk III
(c/n R3/AV/125)
Here's a
Frank Walters shot taken at Mascot in 1931 which is good enough to be
used for a CofA
file
photo. Ex G-EBTU, the Avian was first registered in that same
year as G-AUTU. Its first owner
(briefly) was
Capt. W.N. Lancaster in May of 1928 who named it
"Red Rose". It is seen as such
in the photo at the
foot of the page. Lancaster didn't own it long (was he a dealer?)
selling it within
one month to R.
A. Charlton of Sydney. Six months later, on
11 January 1929, it exchanged hands
again, this
time going
to J.R Palmer of Sydney. In 1931 it was the winner
of the
Coffs Harbour
Pageant Aerial Derby
as seen in the photo below, courtesy of the Coffs Harbour Regional
Museum
collection. VH-UTU was
destroyed by fire following a crash
landing at Singleton, NSW on 6 June
1936.
