VH-UTE de
Havilland D.H.87A Hornet Moth
(c/n 8023)
The above photo was taken at
Cootmundra in March 1962 by Bob Neate. VH-UTE was originally
imported in January 1936 and
sold to N.M. Kater of Moree, NSW. It went to Brisbane in
1940
and was stored during WWII. After the war it had
several owners, followed by several restorations.
The results of one of these is
seen in the Mike Vincent shot immediately below, at Bowral, NSW in
August 1976.
Following that is a nice color shot from the Phil
Vabre collection taken at the Avalon
Airshow in 1995. The
aircraft was then, and still is, owned by John Pettit.
. This Hornet Moth is
somewhat unusual in that it
was never converted to the square-wing D.H.87B
configuration. At the
bottom of the page is a rough
image extracted
from the Sydney Morning Herald of 1 January 1936
which stated: "Test flights of this DeHavilland Hornet, a type
new to Sydney, were made
yesterday
by Murray Jones". .
