VH-UQP de Havilland D.H.83 Fox Moth
(c/n 4020)
The nice shot above is from the Wally
Civitco collection, whilst the two lower photos (taken at
the same locale) are from the
Sarah Chinnery collection via the National Library of
Australia.
They all depict the
Fox Moth
whilst it was working for W.R. Carpenter and Co Ltd's service out
of
Wau, New Guinea. The diminutive airliner was named
'Jacqueline'.
The
manual refueling
operation seen in the shot below was de rigueur for the time
and, in fact, still is today in some of
the more
remote PNG
strips. In 1936 this DH83 was sold to
Mandated Airlines. It was written
off when it crashed in the
Bitoi Valley, New Guinea on 17 November
1941.
