VH-UPG de Havilland D.H.60M Moth
(c/n DHA.2)
This interesting shot, from the Geoff Goodall collection,
was taken in Noumea, New Caledonia
in
1931. A de Havilland Australia built machine, it was sold
new to F.V. Roffey of Rockhampton
early in 1931 and shipped to New Caledonia. After
flying the machine locally there until Nov-
ember of that year
he then flew it back to Maryborough, Queensland, a distance of some 900
statute miles. Brave
fellow. Like many of its breed, it was later fitted with a Gipsy
I engine and
converted into
what came to be known as the D.H.60GM. It had a couple of
other private
owners in Queensland
in the 1930s but was laid up during WW II following an accident at
Mackay
early in 1940.
Its CofA was renewed in December of 1945 and, several owners later, was
regis-
tered to K. Drew of
Esk, Qld when it crashed in the Toowoomba Ranges on 12 February 1951
and was destroyed.
