VH-ULR de Havilland D.H.60G Gipsy Moth
(c/n 977)
None of these three images are exactly ideal. Maybe
one day I'll get a better shot of -ULR! The top
photo, from the Frank
Walters collection, shows the Moth at Archerfield, in the mid to late
1930s in
company with Airlines of
Australia Stinson A VH-UKK. Below in the shot from
the John Oxley
Library, State
Library of Queensland collection it is seen with a pair of Gipsy
Moths over Brisbane
in 1933.
VH-ULR was originally registered to
the Qantas dealership in August
1929. Sold soon
afterwards to a
private owner, it joined the
Queensland Aero Club in April 1932
after its C of R had
been allowed to
lapse. It remained
with the Aero Club (which obtained
"Royal" charter in 1935) until
WW II broke out
whereupon it was
impressed into the RAAF in 1940 as
A7-121. In the historic
photo at the
foot of the page, also from the Walters collection, it is seen at
the Brisbane Show in 1929.
The cabriolet auto is
interesting.
