VH-ULP de Havilland D.H.60M
Moth (c/n 1406)
The above photograph is courtesy of the John
Hopton collection via the Airways Museum and
Civil
Aviation Historical
Society. Originally a canopied Coupe, this Moth
was
purchased by the Civil
aviation Branch and
loaned to the Western Branch of the
Australian Aero Club. In 1935 it was re-
converted into
a standard D.H.60M and shortly thereafter transferred to the Victorian
Aero Club.
The historic shot below,
from the Frank Walters collection, shows it at Essendon, probably after
the
club had
acquired Royal status. I'm not sure who the cadets were.
The boys were possibly ATC,
and did the Girl
Guides have an Aviation Division?. Phil Vabre has more on
this Moth at:
http://www.airwaysmuseum.com/DH60%20VH-ULP.htm
In April 2006 I received an email from Mr. Mal Shipton
who had purchased this historic machine.
(Evidently enough of the original existed to permit the
reconstruction to carry the same rego!). Any-
way Mal sent
the nice air-to-air shot of it (second below) being "ferried home" (to
Queensland?).
Finally, at the foot of the page is a photo of -ULP taken
by Richard
Penna when it was owned by
his father,
Les, who was a renowned
re-builder of Moths and Tigers.
