VH-ULJ de Havilland
D.H.60G
Moth
(c/n 1074)
This is an excerpt from the
image of VH-USX which came from the
CAHS collection (via Phil
Vabre). The image below, from the John Oxley Library, State
Library of Queensland shows the
aircraft at Archerfield, Brisbane circa 1933 when it was privately
owned, having been sold into
Queensland from NSW the prior year. Later in 1933 it was
acquired by Holden's Air Transport
Services of Salamaua, New Guinea. Although it only had
1,442 hours on the airframe it was found
to be
in poor condition and required a complete rebuild. It
eventually became part of the Guinea
Airlines fleet when Holden's was taken over by that airline in
1937. It was written off following a
heavy landing at Wau in September 1941. The remains were
shipped to Adelaide and, many years
later, it emerged, restored, as part of the static exhibit at the South
Australian Aviation Museum.
The image at the foot of the page, from
the Daryl Mackenzie collection, shows it in storage prior
to
its static restoration.
