VH-UKU de
Havilland D.H.60G Gipsy Moth
(c/n 1065)
Except for an initial two tear stint at
Mascot, this Moth spent all its career in Queensland. The above
shot,
from the Frank Walters collection, is undated by I suspect it was taken
at Archerfield in the mid
to late 1930s.
The image below is from the John Oxley Library collection
and the caption indicates
that the
heavily bearded gentlemen
was "Pastor Schwarz", although the machine was never officially
registered
to any religious organization. The locale was given
as possibly Hope Vale, Queensland.
This
Moth was involved in an
incident on 30 April 1939 as reported by the Brisbane Courier Mail the
following
day (1 May 1939)
stating that "a
young man who had never
flown before attempted to steal
the
machine from Archerfield. He
was thwarted by a mechanic" Anyway. -UKU was impressed into
RAAF service in
1940 becoming A7-87. It was
sold at the end of the war to S/Ldr S. Homewood,
but appears not
to have been
granted a new CofA at that time.
