VH-UJM de Havilland D.H.60G Gipsy Moth
(c/n 986)
Just what this Qantas Gipsy Moth was doing on
the main street of Camooweal in 1929 was not
indicated on the narrative of this John Oxley Library, State Library of
Queensland image. It does
not
appear to be in any form of distress. The photo
below, from the Frank Walters collection
shows it
as G-AU in the hangar at Archerfield circa May, 1929. The shot at
the foot of the page
taken by Jim
Sawdy (reproduced here via the
Roger McDonald collection) shows the Moth at
Monto, Qld in
the
early 1930s in a
completely different paint scheme. By then it was
registered
to a
private owner in Maryborough,
Queensland. The caption stated "first aeroplane to
land at
Monto". In 1935 it was acquired by Pacific Aerial
Transport Ltd and sent to Wau, New
Guinea.
VH-UJM was
destroyed by a Jap air raid on that
remote outpost of the Empire on 21
January 1941.
