G-AUIV Avro 594 Avian
IIIA
(c/n R3/CN/193)
This Avian was first registered to aviation legend Les Holden of Sydney
in December 1928.
The above image, from the A.J. Perier collection (courtesy of the State
Library of NSW)
depicts
Les standing alongside the brand new machine. In 1931 the
Avian was registered
to Aircrafts Pty Ltd
of Brisbane (leased?), although a year later it was back in Holden's
hands
and taken to New Guinea to form the nucleus of his Holden's Air
Transport Services Ltd fleet,
based in
Salamaua. The photo below is from the Dave Eyre
collection and shows the Moth
now as VH-
VH-UIV crashed in New Guinea
in September 1933
and was written off.
