G-AUHS de Havilland D.H.60G Gipsy Moth
(c/n 880)
This
Moth was named 'Bronzewing' at the time this photo (from the John
Hopton collection) was
taken, circa 1929. The
image at the foot of the page, from the George Matthews collection (via
the National Library of Australia)
shows the nose of the machine in more detail. This
aircraft was
one of those assigned by the Civil
Aviation Branch of the
Dept of Defence to the Australian Aero
Club
(Victorian Branch) at Essendon. Immediately below it is seen in
the foreground, circa 1937,
after it
had been re-registered (in 1932) to VH-UHS. The machine in back
is VH-UHP, also a
club aircraft
(photo via the CAHS collection).. The next shot, from the Kevin OReilly
collection
appears to have been taken at the
same venue, although the craft is now wearing club wings on
the forward fuselage.
VH-UHS was destroyed by fire on 11
June 1939 when it was involved in
a
collision on the ground (at
Essendon) with another Moth, VH-UNP.
