VH-UGW de
Havilland D.H.60G Gipsy Moth
(c/n 834)
This grainy
image, taken from a tiny print in the State Library of New South Wales
collection
may well be the only photo ever taken of this Moth, used by Qantas for
mail runs from 1931
to 1937.
The above shot was taken at.Birdum Creek, NT.
Actually, this Moth was first
registered to Qantas
in June 1929. It was sold to S. Zlotkowski of Muttaburra,
Qld two
months later,
suggesting that the airline was also a de Havilland aircraft
dealer/representative
at the time.
Qantas bought it back in May 1930. In 1937 it was
sold to Light Aeroiplanes
Pty Ltd of Archerfield,
and was written off when it crashed into the Brisbane River at Corinda,
Qld on 8 December
1937.
