VH-UGE de Havilland D.H.60
Moth
(c/n 2)
This was the second Moth assembled by de
Havilland Aircraft Pty Ltd at South Melbourne in
1927
The aircraft was originally sold to Morobe Trading Co Ltd
of Rabaul, New Guinea. It
had
many, many prangs during it life and came back south to NSW in November
1928 following
one
of these accidents at Lae. It was rebuilt again in 1932 as a
D.H.60X following a crash at
Newcastle in March 1931. It was then badly damaged by fire
at Wamberal, NSW in 1932 and
languished for several years, being finally rebuilt in March 1936 as a
D.H.60G, only to crash
again near Scone a month later The rather
washed-out image above, from the Frank Walters
collection, was taken at Mascot around February 1940 following yet
another rebuild, and after
being acquired by Airflite Pty Ltd. . A crash at Kurnell, NSW
some twelve days after this last
rebuild (19 February, 1940) put paid to the poor old thing
forever.
