VH-UFL de
Havilland D.H.60
Moth
(c/n 352)
VH-UFL was a 1927 model imported
into Australia in March of that year. It was registered
to Qantas and named 'Swift'. They sold it
two years later to the Civil Aviation Branch who
loaned it to the Australian Aero
Club, Queensland Section at Archerfield. The rare shot above
of -UFL whilst still with
Qantas is from the John Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland
collection.
Rare
inasmuch as the aircraft crashed into the Brisbane River at Pinkenba,
Qld on
19 August 1930 and was
written
off. Graeme Parsons was able to glean a couple of newspaper
illustrations
seen below. The upper, from the Brisbane
Courier for 2 September 1929 (the
paper hadn't yet merged with
the Daily Mail at that time), showing the
Moth as G-AUFL
"awaiting the starter's
signal at the Eagle Farm
Aerial Derby.", and the lower, from the same
newspaper for 20 August 1930 showing the Moth being
hoisted aboard HMAS Albatross. .
