VH-UDD de Havilland D.H.83 Fox
Moth
(c/n 4063)
A
"prohibited registration" at the time (1921) when the G-AUDs were
assigned this Fox Moth was
registered in 1936 to
MacRobertson Miller Aviation (actually their first aircraft). In its
original livery
it had a very
uncontrasty rego, as seen in the above shot from the Nigel Daw
Collection. Possibly
light blue on silver. The image
immediately below is from the Geoff
Goodall collection and shows
two ladies who had taken a joy ride in
it at the seaside town of Victor Harbour, SA, circa 1936.
MMA's
chocolate brown titling can barely be discerned on the
nose. This Fox Moth had previously
been
G-ACGN and flown during 1935 on a tour of
the U.K. by "C.W.A. Scott's Air
Display" before
being purchased by MMA in November 1935 and
shipped to Australia.
MMA later transferred
-UDD to their Perth
division until it was sold in
January 1940 to Madang Aerial Transport Co in New
Guinea. The washed out image at the foot of the page
from my own collection, shows it
in Perth in
1936. During 1941 it
was impressed by the RAAF in New Guinea but
found to be in poor condition
and was dismantled for parts. It was
among the
many aircraft destroyed by Japanese attacks on NG
airfields during
February and March
1942.
