G-AUHW de
Havilland D.H.61 Giant
Moth (c/n
330)
This image above is from the
collection
of Mrs. P.McKenzie, via the Civil Aviation Historical
Society.
As can be seen, the Giant Moth was a
large machine, powered by a 485 h.p. Bristol
Jupiter XI engine. G-AUHW originally imported for Airgold Ltd of
Sydney in November of
1928
and named
'Canberra'. In the event it crashed at Cowes, Victoria
soon
after
being
registered and delivery by Airgold
was never taken up. The image below is from the CAHS
archives and was probably
taken at Essendon. Repaired, the machine was sold to Les
Holden
early in 1929 and used by
his Holden's Air Transport Services Ltd in New
Guinea. Photo # 3
from the Daryl Mackenzie collection, shows it
at that venue in the
early 1930s, by then
registered VH-. The aircraft crashed at
Kaiapit, New Guinea in November of 1934 and
was destroyed by
the
resultant fire. The fourth photo, below, is courtesy
of the John
Oxley
Library, State Library of
Queensland collection, and was
probably taken at Archer-
field,
circa 1929, possibly while the aircraft was en route to New
Guinea.
Finally at the foot
of
the
page is a photograph from the State Library
of New South Wales collection
illustrating
'Canberra'
possibly on the same trip north. Flown by Les Holden, it
carried the Honorable
S.M. Bruce (former Prime Minister) to Coffs Harbor where this arrival
shot was taken.
