G-AUFI de Havilland D.H.60
Moth
(c/n 277,278 or 279)
This is a
completely fake photograph, included in this registration for
completeness sake*.
.
G-AUFI was another of the hybrid Moths, assembled by WA Airways Ltd
from
components
of
three other airframes. They were operated by Perth Flying School
at Maylands. One might
conjecture that -UFI had some hidden defects inasmuch as it was
certified on 15 February
1927 and crashed at East Perth, WA some five months
later (18 July 1927) when it spun in
from 2000 ft and struck an electrical power pole whilst being flown
solo by student pilot
Ray Wilson. Sadly Mr. Wilson was killed.. In fact, in
retrospect the aircraft itself was
probably up to snuff, since I was taught on Tiger Moths that the
absolute minimum altitude
in
which to begin spins was 3000'
* If a photo of G-AUFI
was actually ever taken, I have been unable to glean one, despite
searches
on sundry Western Australian publication archives.
