VH-SSA (1) de Havilland D.H.82A Tiger Moth
(c/n DHA111)
Super Spread was a crop
dusting/spreading company formed in 1953 at Moorabbin. They ran
a dozen or so Tiger Moths in the early years. VH-SSA was the
first and was formerly A17-114,
registered to Super Spread in August 1953. My shot above was
taken just after that in my photo
outside their hangar at Moorabbin. The photo below is by
the late and great Peter R. Keating
and shows -SSA with a crash bar fitted. Tigers were
common in at Moorabbin in those days,
with not only Super Spread, but other agricultural concerns having them
as their crop dusters of
choice, not to mention the Royal Victorian Aero Club which had a slew
of them. VH-SSA
was withdrawn from the register in December 1963 and then languished
for fifty years somewhere
before being being restored in New Zealand in April 2012 as ZK-SSA (or
actually, just SSA in
that
annoying habit NZ has of dropping the prefix national identity).
