VH-SHC Dornier Do
27A-4
(c/n 519)
The above shot, by Al
Bovelt (via Geoff Goodall) was taken at Wewak in December 1966.
This Do
27 was first registered in Australia on 16 September 1965 to the
Catholic Mission
of
the Holy Ghost at Wewak, and was previously with the Luftwaffe as
GA+371 then rebuilt
for
civil sale. It flew with the mission in the NG Highlands until
sold in March 1973 to Brenton
Miller in
Adelaide who operated charters to the outback as Skytours Air Charter.
The STOL
capabilities of
the aircraft were well served operating, as it was, out of the north of
SA into
rough
outback strips. Surviving a crash at Leigh Creek, SA it went to
Bill Suhr's Peninsular
Air
Services at Moorabbin who painted up some of their aircraft for radio
and TV promotions.
No doubt the
"Rocks:", as seen in the Barry Maclean shot below, was one of these.
Barry's
second shot, seen at the foot of the page, was taken at an air show at
Avalon in the 1990s.
VH-SHC
was written off in a crash at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania on 9 February
1992.
