As indicated in other narratives in this gallery of pictures, Piper
Cubs were not common in
Australia. In
fact, this one returned to the US later in its career.
Registered in December
1968, VH-PXX was Ansett General Aviation’s Super Cub demonstrator when
David
Carter photographed it at an air show at Hoxton Park, Sydney, in 1969.
By 1976 it was
owned by a farmer at Einasleigh in North Queensland. Geoff
Goodall's shot immediately
below, was at Mareeba in the 1990s.
As stated above, in Novembe 2002 VH–PXX was
cancelled from the Australian register
as sold in the US. At the time it was owned by Fire Rite Industries of
Riddells Creek,
Victoria. The aircraft became N92RR and was re-registered N184WL in
2011
Former owner William Murrish recalls, "I purchased VH-PXX (N92RR) in
2011 with my
father. We personalized the registration number to reflect our names.
N184WL stands for
18(PA18) 4(for) W(William) and L(Larry). I recently [as of 2019] sold
the aircraft to a
good friend, so I still get to fly it." The images below show N184WL,
now based in
Colorado Springs, with a very small registration painted just above the
tailplane. The
bottom photo is William himself. Note that the aircraft's tundra tyres
have been replaced
with skis - not something you see in Australia!
