VH-PSZ de Havilland D.H.84
Dragon
(c/n 2064)
The above photo, by John M. Smith (via the Geoff
Goodall collection) shows Dragon -PSZ
at RAAF Mallala, SA
in September 1958. It was one of the first aircraft for SA Air
Taxis Ltd,
of Adelaide who
later grew into SAAATS with a large fleet based in Adelaide, Alice
Springs,
Darwin, West
Irian and Indonesia. Another shot from Geoff's
collection (below) shows the
Dragon
following a forced landing near Maitland, NSW on 12 June 1961 whilst on
a charter
flight from
Quirindi to Sydney. It was being flown by pioneer pilot
Joe Palmer at the time.
Originally A34-75, this aircraft was
civilianized in April 1946 as VH-APJ(1)*
for the Royal
Aero Club of
NSW. It was re-registered into their series as VH-RSZ
in June
1957. When
sold by the club a quick
brush stroke
made it VH-PSZ.
* VH-APJ(2) was also a Dragon, being c/n 2079, ex A34-90, VH-ASU.
