VH-POP as
N3723Y Cessna 210D
Centurion
(c/n 21058223)
I am frankly
surprised that DCA "allowed" this 210 to participate in the 1964 Ansett
Air Race in
US rego.
That they did so is evidenced by Greg Banfield's shot above taken at
Bankstown on 29
March of that
year. It was flown by A.D. Simpson of Cheltenham, Victoria.
This aircraft was
originally destined to become VH-RLY but adopted the markings VH-POP
instead. It was later
involved in an incident at Wilcannia, NSW
whereby the pilot, a well known local (Roma) business-
man took
off in the aircraft in a somewhat inebriated state, (with
passengers) and, immediately
after getting airborne executed a steep
turn at low level resulting in the machine impacting the ground.
