VH-IAV Piper
PA-28-140 Cherokee
(c/n 28-21157)
What happened to the rear fuselage?
Greg Banfield, who took the shot at Bankstown in March
1974 suggests that
maybe the pilot had received a really bad landing out of it and, like
golfers do
to their clubs after
hitting a bad shot, took it out on the poor aircraft
itself! I do not know what
'CAC' was, but was
doubtless an aero club. The aircraft had passed on to Leasair
Holdings (Pty)
Ltd by the late 1970s.
Re-registered VH-DJM, it ran off the end of the runway at
Bankstown,
allegedly whilst a
student pilot had selected the empty tank. When repaired it
became VH-DUM,
and was acquired by
its present owner, David Neaves. David restored it in 2009
and once again
had it re-registered it to
-IAV. Ian McDonell took a shot of it at Albion Park in August
2015.
