VH-GVD Avro 652A
Anson
1
(c/n unknown)
VH-GVD's history also comes from Fred Niven:
Ex RAAF Anson I AW658 (6.SFTS, Mallala, SA). Painted as VH-AOC 6/55, but NTU.
Purchased by Southern Airlines
7/55 from Air Operations Pty. Ltd., Moorabbin; as a replacement for
VH-GVB. Registered VH-GVD
to Southern Airlines
Ltd. 22/7/55.
After the introduction of the Herons, it continued to operate
over all routes, including the Essendon-
Warrnambool-Millicent-Naracoorte-Adelaide service.
It operated the last Southern Airlines service
2/7/57. Sold to
Flinders Island Airlines 7/57. Reregistered VH-FIC, by Flinders Island
Airlines Pty. Ltd. 17/7/57. It took part in the final
Avro Anson fly-past over Melbourne
30/6/62, with Brain & Brown Air Freighters’ VH-BSF & Flinders
Island Airlines’ VH-FIA.
Struck-Off-Register
30/6/62, as part of a general grounding order for Ansons by the D.C.A. It was scrapped at Moorabbin
15/12/63
& ended up in a wreckers yard at Northcote.
Like VH-GVB, this
was
one of the nicest Ansons I ever
saw (as Ansons went).
Obviously Southern Airlines took good care of their
aircraft. It came aboard
after Goulburn Valley
Air Services' name had been changed to Southern
Airlines, so never did appear in GVAS livery.
