VH-BQG de
Havilland D.H.82A Tiger Moth
(c/n DHA261)
This Bob Neate shot of VH-BQG was taken
at Narrandera during 1963, sitting on flat tyres in a
hangar surrounded by agricultural equipment. It was a retired
cropsprayer (ex RAAF A17-242,
although not
civlianized until 1954) with Grasslands Aviation of Albury
NSW In 1965 it was rebuilt
back to
a two seater by a Melbourne syndicate naming themselves the Tiger Club,
but unfortunately
was written off when blown on to its back by a wind storm at Moorabbin
on the night of 15 October
1966. Given the value of Tiger Moths these days, it is
interesting to read about the event in the "Aust-
ralian Air Log"
edition of the time: 'The
Tiger was left upside down on the grass at Moorabbin
Airport for over a week before any attempt was made to salvage it,
during which time it was further
wrecked.'. It was never to fly again.
