VH-BHJ
Scottish
Aviation Twin Pioneer 1
(c/n 504)
An unusual visitor to Moorabbin one winter's day in 1957
was this Twin Pin belonging to the
Australian Iron and
Steel Division of the Broken Hill consortium. (Hence the -BH
sequence rego).
This aircraft was a lot larger than I had imagined
when I saw one in the flesh....in the metal, I suppose
that would
be. Unfortunately it was damaged beyond repair in 1960 during a
cyclone (a hurricane in
the U.S.) whilst it was on
Koolan Island in the Yampi Sound of Western Australia in
1960. It was
the former
G-AOEP. The color shot below below was taken by Alan
Fraser at Cairns in 1959
and is courtesy of the
Maurice Austin collection. And finally at the foot of the
page......no, not some
result of a horrible pilot error but
that of a cyclone which up-ended the aircraft at Koolan Island, off
Derby WA on Christmas
Eve 1960. Such was the damage that it was declared a
write-off.
