VH-BAB (3) Douglas DC-3CS1C3G
(c/n
14050/25495)
This was formerly DCA's VH-CAO and was sold to Brain
& Brown and operated by them as a
freighter
from 1962 to 1974. Greg Banfield's shot (above) was taken
at Essendon in February
1965.
I suspect Macarthur Job's shot (below) was taken
somewhat later, at the same venue.
Photo No 3 is a nice color shot
by Danny Tanner at Essendon in March 1976. -BAB passed to
Air Express
Holdings in 1976 and then
was on display at the museum at
Chewing Gum Field,
Tallebudgera, Qld in the late 1970s. The image at the foot
of the page, by the indefatigable Danny
Tanner
was taken at that locale in March 1982, showing the poor old thing as a
"war bird'....what
else? When that
museum closed it went to
Drage's Air World at Wangaratta,
Victoria. When
Drage's closed it was trucked
to Mareeba
airport where it served as a static display for many years
and
the
engines occasionally run. It ha since
been purchased by David Kingshott and taken to
Caboolture Airfield just
north of Brisbane.
VH-BAB can be
seen flying in formation with the
DC-3 VH-SBL at an air
show at Point Cook
in December 1976 in the
entry for VH-SBL.
