VH-AZP
de Havilland D.H.82A Tiger Moth
(c/n DHA974/T303)
VH-AZP was a former
Royal Aero Club of NSW aircraft, (ex A17-539) registered to the club
in November 1946. At the foot of the page is a nice image of it
from the John Hopton collection
showing it in full ACNSW livery of black rego on dark orange fuselage
whilst it was attending an
air show at Broken Hill, NSW in 1948. By the
time I saw it at Moorabbin in 1956 (above) it was
privately-owned, and still sporting its canopy. On 27 March
1969
it ditched into the sea off King
Island, as seen in the shot below
from the Geoff Goodall collection. It was owned at
the time by
Mr.
D. N. Dodge of Currie,
the small town on King
Island. Nobody was hurt but the Tiger was
not rebuilt.
However its parts were salvaged and in typical Tiger fashion were
distributed among
Tiger
rebuilders far and wide. Geoff recalls running across parts from
it years later on a farm at
Goolwa, SA!
