Dragon
(c/n 2020)
The above shot is from
the album of Bernadette Wood of Melbourne whose father, Dr. Alan
J. Wood was a doctor who who flew with the Flying Doctor Service
out of Cloncurry. Qld.
The image of -ASL
below is from Phil Vabre who took it from "an old aviation
encyclopedia".
This Dragon was the former RAAF A34-31 civlianized in
November 1946 for
the Northern
Territory Aerial Medical Service and originally operated primarily out
of Darwin as an air
ambulance. It
also did a short stint in Alice Springs
in 1952 (also as a Flying Doctor aircraft)
although as the above shot illustrates, may also have found its way to
Cloncurry at some point
in
its career before returning to Darwin. In fact, in
Dr. Wood's photo it is wearing TAA tail
stripes in addition to the ambulance Maltese Cross on the
tail. VH-ASL was reregistered
VH-SJW in 1956.
